A True "All-Ocean" Kayak
Summary – The Sirona kayak measures about 16 feet (488cm) in length, which makes it short enough to be classified as an ocean play-boat. However, it's long enough to maintain its speed even when moderately loaded. While it's not designed for extended trips lasting several weeks, it's definitely a great option for most kayakers, including those who plan to camp overnight.
Many individuals consider kayaks that are approximately 16 feet (488cm) in length to be the optimal size for sea kayaking. While we do not rigidly adhere to this belief, this length permits comfortable multiday trips due to fundamental physics. The smaller the footprint of a kayak, the more it must sink into the water to support a given displacement, making it more susceptible to variations in load. Consequently, a 16-foot sea kayak is more stable and better equipped for handling a load than a shorter kayak.
The Sirona, a kayak released in 2015, was met with immediate success, as most testers noted that it retained the versatility of its predecessor, the Avocet, while possessing a more playful personality reminiscent of the earlier Pintail. Despite its lively nature, its 16-foot hull is one of the fastest in its class and responds predictably to edging. Moreover, it has a stability profile that allows even novice paddlers to exploit its capabilities.
Although it was not originally conceived as a long-range expedition kayak, the Sirona is more than capable of multi-day adventures. The kayak's hull speed is an asset, enabling a Sirona paddler to keep up with any group, while its ergonomic seating provides all-day comfort. Additionally, its predictable handling easily absorbs variations in load.
While longer kayaks have a higher maximum hull speed and greater capacity for a heavy payload, the Sirona is a superb choice for regular social day paddles, overnight trips, and infrequent longer expeditions. Regardless of your skill level, you will appreciate the delightful paddling experience the Sirona provides.
